Episode 4 Jean The Haven ===
~Hi. ~[00:00:00] Hi. And welcome back to Luxury Cruising. I am so excited to share an interview with you today with Jean Armstrong. She is a fellow physician and a coach, and we met on The Most Amazing Retreat, and she is here to tell us about her experience in the Haven. So Jean, Before we get started, tell us all about you.
Well, first, Crystal, thanks for having me. Yeah, I'm Jean Armstrong, a family physician by training. Metabolin EHRs, so ~those, ~those pesky things we as doctors have to do all that documentation in. But, and foremost, I love to travel. Like, DNA. We camped everywhere. When I was a kid, my parents went on a few cruises.
That's the first vacation I remember my parents taking that we didn't ~did ~to go on. It was for work and it was very elusive. And they came back with ~tails ~of swimming with dolphins and things that, like in 1982, I didn't know anybody had [00:01:00] ever done. ~Right. ~So cool. So I have that travel bug and so much so that I'm writing a book honestly about.
~About ~travel, really it's about helping people plan vacations that they're going to love and be inspired by. I've been very fortunate to have a lot of transformative vacation. Matter of fact, if I have to make a big decision or I'm changing careers or I'm launching a new business, I go on a little solo trip for a couple days.
It's sort of my recharge and I love it. I'm also very fortunate to be married to Someone that got me early on, and so he had a job, he worked in plastic surgery as a surgical assistant. He never had time off, unless the surgeon took time off, and he never did. So after a few frustration things, you know, residency, we couldn't afford to travel anyway, he promised me we would go on vacation every six weeks.
And I wanted to hold him to that in some capacity. Not that we go every six weeks but we definitely make lots of time for that quick trip. Or [00:02:00] something life changing like this awesome cruise we did where we got to stay in The Haven. Awesome, awesome. Well, tell us about the ship, the room, the itinerary.
What made you decide on all the specific details around this specific trip? Yeah, so it was 2016. I can't actually believe it was that long ago now. And I had never been to Europe. ~And so, ~and my husband had had a brief stopover in a couple of countries on his way to Africa. And so I really wanted to go to Europe.
I had a really good friend that I had met here in the States. Well, her husband was working here, and they lived in England. Sadly, her husband had passed a couple years before this trip. And so we wanted to see each other, right? It's like, what can we do so we can see each other? But also, I wanted to see some Europe.
And I just thought a Mediterranean cruise sounded fancy. At the same time like just the ~alert ~of Italy was pretty, pretty big for me. And my husband's a big car guy. So his dream is to have a Ferrari. And there's a lot of cool Italian sports [00:03:00] cars, Lamborghini, we all know Ferrari. I love food. So Italy, you know, appealed.
So we were looking something to spend some time with a friend. So we wanted three people. Plus, we wanted to do some stuff by ourselves, so we planned this really, what we consider at the time, a bucket list trip where we were gonna, so we flew from the States to Italy, we spent about five days roaming around on our own, and then we met up with our friend ~in England, from England, ~in Rome, she had actually been on this ship before, so she said, okay, the ship you should go on is this, you know, NCL, we're gonna go on this Epic, it's a massive ship I think it holds like 4, 000 people, ~and ~And I'll be honest with you.
I was scared of that because my husband, we've been on a few cruises years ago. We didn't continue cruising. Cause we went back in the day where you had those assigned tables for dinner and you ate with strangers. That was not my husband's jam myself. I've never met a stranger. I, you know, I talked up the group, had fun.
And we really had fun on the [00:04:00] cruise, except for that, and that wasn't those, you know, we, again, we were students, so bargain basements you know, ~no, ~no porthole, no balcony, like, go down so many flights of stairs, you're not sure you're going to make it back up again was our previous cruising experience.
But my friend said, no, no, we've been on this, and they have this thing called the Haven. And she and her daughter had both been on it and had stayed in the haven. They'd gotten a really good deal when it was fairly new. They also had been on this ship a couple times because this ship is unique back at the time because it was the first one I think to introduce those solo suites.
So sadly again, my friend and her daughter of all things both had their husbands ~past ~so they liked to go solo. And they build a ship for that. So start looking at the Haven is like, yeah, maybe this will work. Right? So really like the fact that it left from Italy because we were going to spend a few days in Italy ahead of time, which we did.
We also spent another three or four days in Italy. When we came back, there was two stops in Italy, which also made it nice because we [00:05:00] didn't have to drive as much or travel by train as much through Italy because we know we were going to see some areas. Another big thing for us is, again, I had not been anywhere else.
So I liked the itinerary that it seemed very approachable. So there's a couple stops in France, which allowed us to do like Marseille and see that area. But at the Cannes stop, we actually went to Monte Carlo. Again, AR guy thing. So a very famous F1 Formula one race in Monaco, and there's a particular turn that's considered the Tightest hairpin and Formula one.
It's called the Fairmont. Hairpin, because the Fairmont Hotel sits on that corner. So we actually had a private guide take us to that hotel. We went to their beach club so we could get good photographs of that picture. It was really a fun day. So that sounds like, yeah, I mean just, you know, taking a little ~side, ~sidestep, like that sounds pretty luxurious to tell us about that [00:06:00] excursion, like a kind of a private excursion ~to ~that includes this formula one experience and the Fairmount hotel.
Tell us about that. Yeah. So throughout the trip, ~so we, ~we got a really good package deal. And so one of the things again, that appealed about the Haven is. So they were doing a lot of offers at the time. So like free wifi, free, special dining, free alcohol, and not that my husband and my best friend are luscious, but they can drink, right?
So that was appealing. And so we got the third person, we're in a family suite, so she had her own area. We have two bathrooms. And so I felt like splurging on that trip. It came with a few like money towards some share excursions. But what we were looking to do was a little unique. So we actually had private tours and mixed with their tours.
And so I went online since being a seasoned ~travel ~traveler, I went ~to trip it and or simply ~to trip advisor. And I just started ~looking, ~putting in, ~you know, ~our itinerary, where we're going to be. And I looked for private guides. My friend was actually quite nervous. She reminded me multiple times that the ship doesn't wait.
If you're not back on [00:07:00] time, and I just felt like that was a little bit of a scare tactic, right? ~Like, if you don't book our excursion ~Because, again, my husband and I are not people who are going to sit on a big bus tour. We did one big bus tour on this trip, using our Shura Sturgeon money, because we were going, when we landed in Naples, we went to Pompeii.
Everybody was sort of putting it in the same way anyway, and then we took a private tour once we were there. So, we tried to strike that balance. So we, one of our first stops was Laverneau. So, that's basically, most people there are going to take a tour to Florence. Since we were going to stay in Florence after the cruise, we were lucky enough to do more of the local area and it's probably one of our favorite days.
We went to Pisa and we went to a small town called Volterra, which is highly recommended from the Rick Steves guidebooks. And it was a magical day. And what was so nice is we got off the ship. There was our guide waiting in a van, picked it up. Just the three of us had cold water, talked to us about everything we were interested in and [00:08:00] he had an itinerary.
Cause we'd been conversing, you know, via email, but it was also in the moment like, Oh, you might want to stop here. Let's stop and get a pastry. Let's do this. ~It was, ~it was amazing. ~It also ended up being. ~I love about like private excursions is that they do have that super luxurious feel where you've got somebody in a nice air conditioned car and there might give you some, you know, snacks or water.
And when you look at it. Because cruise ship excursions are pricey. And so when you look at, if you've got a group of people, like if there are three of you, probably for the cost of the three of you to do the cruise ship excursion, it would not be that much more expensive to just have a private excursion with one person and It's all up to you.
Like let's go into my, it's so local, like, let's go into my favorite bakery and get these, you know, fantastic pastries. Look here, like this is my friend's coffee shop. He makes the best [00:09:00] espresso in Italy. Right. That kind of adds to the luxury. that's, that's amazing. Tell us about the room.
Absolutely. I couldn't agree with you more. The room was fabulous since it was a family suite. ~It wasn't as. ~So, we had a queen bedroom with this huge bathroom that had, you know, huge big glass looking out into the sea with this giant bathtub, a big soaking tub. I'm a big bath person. I don't know.
I feel like that's a great way to luxury. And so, I actually have a picture of my feet at the end of the tub with the ocean view because I just thought that was the biggest treat. Again, having been on really tiny cruises where both Rex, my husband, and I couldn't fit in the bathroom at the same time, right, to have this bathroom where he could be shaving and I could be, you know, taking a bath, that alone was luxurious and so great space there.
The bedroom, you know, had a queen bed, plenty of storage. ~It's a little, I mean, it's. ~There's not extra room in there because you get this big bathroom that then opened up to a living room that had a nice little couch TV that led to the [00:10:00] balcony. There was also a four person dining room table, a refrigerator.
And then the other bedroom is more like you know, there's no windows. It's more like a day bed that can convert. Another big plus, we were really impressed with the amount of storage space because we were in Italy for, we were gone a total of two weeks, so we had a, maybe a larger suitcase than we probably should have, but there was room to like hang up all of our clothes and store the luggage out of the way~ for both, ~for all three guests.
And then our friend had her own bathroom, which obviously you'd want to do as adults cruising. Probably one of the things I like most is, you know, because it's the Haven, they have butler service. They're bringing you snacks all the time. I drink a lot of water. I have a water pack. Is, you know, we actually could hang out in the room, even though we hung out in lots of the places in the ship and we're always on the go.
One night we had gone to the sing along piano bar, Howl at the Moon. That's another reason why we picked that ship, is my friend and I, that's one [00:11:00] of our favorite things to do, is doing pianos. And Anyway, we'd gone out, and so it was like two in the morning, and one of the great things was spending time with my friend, right?
She lives in England, I live in the States. We don't get to see each other very often. And so we'd come home, and come back to our living room. And we're sitting on the, so there's a big enough couch that you can sit on it, right? And enjoy. We ordered pizza from room service and did a girl movie marathon.
That's awesome. And so we sort of got the best of a romantic husband and wife location, a great friend location, a great tour location because we did so many amazing tours. So it really felt like. That ship offered everything that ~you could want when you want it. Yeah, yeah. I love that. It offered everything ~you could want when you want it.
~Tell us the butler. ~Tell us about like the butler service. ~What, ~what kinds of things did the butler do for you? You know, they, they say they can do anything for you. There are people who have them unpack, etc. I'm probably never going to be the person who has someone unpack. I don't think that's luxury for me because I want to do it myself, right?
That's probably my OCD. But [00:12:00] yeah, they're around for anything. Like you just pass them in the hall. And, you know, in that short time, they're always addressing you by name. You know, if they ask you a few questions and there's something, you know, you like, for example the Haven has its own restaurant.
Probably one of my favorite parts about the Haven is its own restaurant. So we ate breakfast there most days. Sometimes you had it to yourself again, gorgeous views and they had these amazing croissants filled with, you know, almond paste. They were amazing selection. And so obviously they knew I liked that on day one or two because they would show up at our room.
Oh, wow. Yeah. That's how they would leave snacks. Those would show up and you can tell what they were, what was showing up was, so they really have a big attention to detail. And you know, if you ask for anything, they're, ~they're going to, ~they're going to make it happen. Your butler is also the person, like if you decide you want to go to a show, so they had like a Broadway style show and my friend and I decided we wanted to go just let the concierge know, which is right there by [00:13:00] your room.
And then your butler shows up and walks you down five minutes before it starts and puts you in the second row. Right, because there's no ~way ~line at all, which is really, that was a big appeal for me is because my husband, like I said, didn't like huge crowds. ~I was ~the reason I mentioned that there's like 4000 people that the ship can hold.
Is, I was shocked if you asked me there was a hundred people on this cruise. Yeah. Because being ~in the, ~in the Haven, you have your own exit and entry line. They walk you down to things and when you're just walking around the ship to use amenities like the spa or ~how the moon. ~You don't see ~the, ~as many people as you do, ~like ~when there's a buffet or like ~when, when the, ~when the big group is loading and unloading.
So we just, we never saw any of that, which is. ~It's ~like you had your own private giant yacht. Yes, exactly. ~Yeah. ~Yeah. any other like specialty dining, specialty restaurants that you tried? Obviously you probably didn't go to the main [00:14:00] dining room, but you know, ~the, the, ~the Haven restaurant, it was kind of like your main dining room, right?
Yeah. And so it was interesting since our friend had been before, ~she was really, ~she was like, Oh, we have to eat a couple of these specialty restaurants. And again, we'd gotten a great deal where that was included for two people because of where our state room was. And so then we would pay for the third.
So we went to Cagney's, which is sort of the steakhouse, that's sort of universal among NCL. Everywhere we ate was amazing. Like we never had bad food. We always had great service. For me like Cagney's is very good. We wait at the Cucina, which was Italian. One of the things I liked was how many choices they had.
So, ~had, ~had we been by ourselves, we probably would have gone to, like, the teppanyaki or, you know, like, Thai or one of those things but, you know, we had a third person so we were sort of, you know, working, you know, with her, but again, being in the Haven, they just wish you in and out of these places, I loved, you know, interesting.
So I've looked at a few cruises since this in the Haven. [00:15:00] Because I mean, basically we're broken now. I mean, I'm never not going to be in the Haven. I will never, right. Yeah. I wouldn't go if it didn't have something like this. And with this, it's expensive at times, but like, We did all the math. We got a third person for free.
We got dining for free. ~We did all the math. ~really worked out to make it, you know, just a nice, a nice but doable vacation. And so I love the Haven restaurant. I really did. I think he and I would have eaten there every night for dinner if we could, because first of all, they had a nice diverse menu, but if you ask for anything else, most of the times they figured it out.
I don't think I realized that early on, but as we were there, if we had been there another week, I probably would have never left the Haven because that restaurant was so good. I actually think the Haven food was the best food we had. And this is hard to say because you could just tell how fresh it was, [00:16:00] where in the other restaurants, it's not that it wasn't fresh, ~it's hard to say this, ~it's just that it was a menu, they made a hundred of them, so they were ready to serve a hundred lasagnas or whatever.
Right. Where it's just really a la minute, right? It was being cooked right there, right there for us. And so. Yeah. ~And that's cheap. ~To your question, we actually did go to the main dining room ~one, ~one time. I'd read some reviews that, oh it's, it's really beautiful in there, you should see it. And I think it was lunch, like maybe it was the day at sea.
We might've went there for lunch just to see it. And it was actually, ~it couldn't be, ~it must've been for dinner, like a really early dinner, and then we ate again because there was a band. I remember cause it was a band playing, people were dancing. And I thought of like previous cruises I had taken, like I said, back in the day.
And I thought, wow, this is a real upgrade. ~It was, ~it was still, you could still just sit by yourself, which was awesome. Which my husband enjoyed, and it was very elegant. It was like two stories, ~and so, ~and this big dance floor. And so, I just thought all the public areas of the ship. We're [00:17:00] really well done for the size of the ship particularly.
I guess I didn't go in expecting much. It's NCL It's a big giant cruise ship. I was actually amazed by how beautiful it was, you know ~How ~everything was done really purposefully That ship was built in 2010 we were on it in 2016 and it got refurbished I just read in 2020 So, ~you know, it had been, it was, ~you know, it wasn't very new at the time, ~so, ~but it was well cared for.
~That's awesome. ~That's awesome. Yeah, and just to reiterate, this is Norwegian Epic? Yes. Yeah, that's amazing. Anything else that you want people to know with regards to the ship or the entertainment, the activities? I do love a good, you know, dueling piano bar. You know what? I mean, ~that, that, ~that sold it for me.
You know, again, I think when you're planning a vacation, when you're planning a trip, you really have to take the time. People think planning, like I have friends who are like, Oh, you know, they ~asked ~me to plan the trip or they're like, I just can't spend that much time on it. It doesn't take a lot [00:18:00] of time.
One of the things being true to yourself, right? To be honest that I want a dueling piano bar. So I want to go with my friend and my husband because my husband doesn't like to go out at night. Right. You know, we know what he likes. Does like a good glass of bourbon. She likes a good gin. We had the drink package, took him to dinner, got them both liquored up.
We took him back to the, we take him back to the cabin and put him to bed, right? And then we could go to Howl the Moon or have a girls night. And so that was great. And you know, part of that was that I planned it that way, right? So the ship had the offering, but I'm saying what would really make this to your luxuries for me.
Well, getting to spend time with a friend, getting to do things I really enjoy. We did not miss the spa. So, you know, they offer, most cruises like that offer what they call a thermal pass, which lets you get in and use the hot tubs. In the Haven, we had our own hot tub. They also had a mini version of the spa in the Haven.
So, like, I went to the spa. Ooh, [00:19:00] that's nice. I had it right there in the, right above the courtyard where the pool was for the Haven. Which, it was about a 15 minute walk from the Haven to the spa. So I didn't really want to make that trip, you know, like every day, so I actually really enjoyed that they had that there.
You know, we would get up as soon as the ship docked, we would have breakfast, and then we'd head out on these excursions. And, and so, other than the day at sea, we were out most of the day. So we'd come back, and we loved the fact that our room opened into this little courtyard of the haven. So we'd go down by the pool.
We'd be the only three people there. This was a little private haven pool. Yes, exactly. We're the only three people at this pool and the waiter knew our name and our drink order. They had it in our hand as we were sitting down cause we did it every day. ~See, ~maybe there was five more people, but what we like to refer to as our pool that was it, right?
It's such a different experience that, that a lot of people can't. That's what we would look [00:20:00] for. So seeing that we had our own pool, knowing we had access to things, that's what I look for when I'm planning a trip like this, because again, I'm taking my husband's sensitivity into account, but I'm also finding what works for me.
Right. Yeah. That's the key is looking for those details that matter most for you. Right. Exactly. Yeah. Exactly. ~What do you think of all of these things? ~What do you think was the most luxurious aspect of this trip? I think you've kind of already said, but I want to hear it from you. Oh, you know, ~I love everything that, so I think there are a lot, I mean, for me, I ~ I think it's got to be ~the combo, so I don't know if I, this is, I'm going to cheat, I'm going to give you an answer that's cheating.~
~I'm going to say ~the privacy, what I mean by privacy is this private elevator to get you on and off the ship to get you anywhere you want to go so that you're never waiting in a line. ~Yeah. ~To me, never waiting in a line is the most luxurious thing. Everything else. Was just what made it over the top.
~Like if we don't have private access, everything, so ~let's say we had a nice room, we had private access on and off the ship and to everywhere we went, but we had to eat a buffet. It would [00:21:00] still be worth it. The icing on the cake is that I never had to eat a buffet. Which means I also didn't gain 20 pounds, right?
Like, I literally made great meals, but, you know, it was very refined. And the meals were leisurely, right? Because no one was rushing. And let's not forget, like, that's saying a lot because you were in Italy and France. ~it's not like you were short, you, ~it's not like if there was, if the food on the ship wasn't any good, you didn't have any other options, right?
because those mad excursions, like, yeah, you're on import like every day, all day, right? You could have figured it out if the food wasn't good, but instead you decided to go ahead and indulge on the ship. So I think that says a lot about the quality. Of the food. So yeah, that's a good point.
Stepping away from this cruise itself. How do you define luxury?
It's a great question. You know I really like vocabulary. I think words really, you means whatever we give the meaning to. So what's luxurious to one person is, you know, not the exact same as the other. Right. For me, luxury, part of it is [00:22:00] maybe getting my needs met really efficiently, which sounds like the weirdest definition, but it's like being able to, like, you know, if I'm, if I'm in luxury, it's whatever I'm doing, it's just meeting my needs so much.
It's like being swaddled in a warm blanket. Right. I think that's my definition and because that's my definition, I can go on a lot of trips that people might not think are luxurious, but I get a luxurious part of it, right? So sometimes that could be fine dining, fine linens, you know, fine things. And sometimes it could just be privacy, right?
Yeah. Yeah, I get that. So do you have any other? Luxurious trips planned, cruise or otherwise? ~Yeah, so we're we are, ~so that same friend, I haven't seen her for a while. She's remarried and we had never been to her home to visit her because we've met in the States. We've met abroad. So we are going to spend 14 days in England.
So we're flying in September [00:23:00] and can do some fun stuff. And this sort of goes along with luxury. I think it's a very luxurious trip. It won't appeal to everyone, but again, I know my husband, I know what we enjoy to do. So ~we're ~a lot of car focused travel is on this trip and a lot of coffee with my friends.
are renting a car for a primary mode of transportation and pretty much driving all over England. So we're starting in London, but we're. ~In ~route to visit my friend. She lives near Liverpool. So we're going to spend a couple days there. Then we're going to backtrack all the way across the far East end of England to, believe it or not, go to a car factory.
So Lotus is a famous car. They have F1 teams. Yeah. We're going to do a heritage tour there. And then drive around the track. And then we're going to get in the car and drive all the way back to sort of the middle. Where we're going to go to the Morgan Car Factory. Morgan is a car my husband would really like to own.
For those who don't know, it's still built the same way, hundreds of years later, it's a wood frame car. So we're actually going to rent one for three days and drive all [00:24:00] the way to Cotswold, which is the old historic farming area of England, where they now have adorable little villages ~now ~that have shops and pubs and very scenic driving in a car that's a convertible with no room for luggage.
You gotta take a little day pack. We have a big one in the other rental car where we sort of drive around ~and ~and then we're obviously going to spend some time in London and Bath ~and then I'm, ~since I was nine years old, I've been obsessed with Stonehenge. Everybody tells me it's just some rocks. It doesn't matter.
I'm like, I don't care. I want to see the rocks. So, we are going on a tour of ~Stonehenge, well, we're going to ~Stonehenge, and then we booked the Inner Circle tour. It's one of the few things that'll get me on site for a tour at 6 a. m. ~Is, ~that's what time I have to be there, to go to the Inner Stone Circle and ~you know, ~watch the sunrise and All this cool stuff.
So again, for me, I consider that luxurious. I love a good road trip. I know how much my husband, one of the things I love about travel is having experiences that [00:25:00] you talk about for years. He still talks about going to ~that, ~that club and looking at that turn. Matter of fact, we have a picture on the wall of that turn with him in front of it.
And so this Morgan is a car that he loves. And it blends our sensibilities. That's what's luxurious to me about it. Is that he's just going to enjoy driving, and I'm going to enjoy going to all these little small towns. That's one of my favorite things. Right. Just to discover, and we have a loose itinerary.
We know where we're going to sleep, but that's it. The rest is where the day takes us. And you know, today, that spontaneity is luxurious. Yeah, and it sounds like what a lot of people would call like slow travel where you just kind of like go and hang out and there is something really luxurious about slow travel, ~like we don't have to like, like every day has to be it's like, no, we're just gonna see where the day takes us.~
Like, you've got a rough idea of where you want to go on which days, but the fill in is just, let's just see how it goes. That's ~amazing. That sounds ~amazing. I think you're right about the slow travel. And I think the benefit for me is to have some of that and then have some of the more rigidly [00:26:00] planned stuff.
